Project branding for the JGroups project

in Identity Design, JBoss / by James
November 23, 2010

JGroups logo

I completed a logo design for JGroups which is a project under the JBoss umbrella. What is it? “JGroups is a toolkit for reliable multicast communication.” It needed to show precision and accuracy in delivery. We used abstract airplanes in formation to convey this sense of precision.

I also added it to the JBoss Cafepress store and created some swanky desktop wallpapers for the project’s community.

Project branding for the Teiid project.

May 5, 2010

A while back, the Visual Design team did a branding project for the Teiid project on the JBoss Community site. The name is a play on “eii” (Enterprise Information Integration). Turns out, there are very few names that contain eii in them. What the project team came up with is a type of lizard. I had some fun with working up the logo.

What does the project do? “Teiid is a data virtualization system that allows applications to use data from multiple, heterogenous data stores.”

As part of our on going changes to the infrastructure, we’ve moved our design files outside of the old “labs” environment. We’ve got a cool new place for our stuff.

Cycling Jersey Design… Tender Gooch Racing

in Cycling, Graphic Design / by James
September 22, 2009

I’ve been riding with a group of Single Speeders for a while now on a weekly ride on Mondays. Quite a few of them all race together under the banner of “Tender Gooch Racing”. I figured they needed to meet their quota of overweight balding middle aged guys so they made me a member. Suckers.

They like to make fun of other “race teams” so the idea of a mock jersey came up. So, being a designer who can’t seem to say “no”… I couldn’t pass on the chance to help some friends out.

Check out the design.

New logo design for “HornetQ”

in Graphic Design, Identity Design, JBoss, Web Design / by James
July 22, 2009

I just completed the logo design for a renaming project for an open source project at work. HornetQ is a project that deals with messaging between applications. The project lead wanted something a bit on the “sporty” side.

Here is the logo:

New desktops for the projects of the JBoss Community (JBoss.org)

June 3, 2009

In my day job, I’m the Visual Design Lead for the JBoss Community site. I’ve been working for JBoss.org for several years. My role is is quite interesting in that I’m responsible for the brand and the usability of the site as well as I help the individual projects with their branding. I also help with the usability and user interface design on the projects from time to time too.

Anyway, that being said. I’ve spruced up the site a bit by adding spiffy new desktops for the site and several of the projects. We’ll be adding new ones from time to time as we complete branding exercies for projects.

Identity design: logo and jersey for “Force”

in Graphic Design, Identity Design, Paintball / by James
June 16, 2008

I’ve been working on a logo and jersey design for a local paintball team “Force” preparing to participate in the NPPL series. Through feedback from the team owner, I designed a logo inspired by mega-rock bands of the 1970-80′s.

Check out their logo

After the logo was design, I worked up a jersey reflecting the grungy/alternative nature of competitive paintball.

Laser engraved design for my paintball marker.

As a designer, I’ve always done work for various teams I’ve played for just because I can’t stand to be associated with crappy branding. I recently had my CCM SS-25 (my pump paintball marker) laser engraved with some organic/grungy graphics I designed just because… well, just because. I worked with Aaron over at Austin Laser Art to make this happen.

Check it out:

It’s about damn time.

I’ve decided to start a blog… really original eh? This will be a mixture of personal and professional, since honestly, it all blurs together. I’ll be making random comments and observations about design, family, paintball, rc, etc. You know, whatever comes to mind. I figure it would be a great way for my friends and family to keep up with what’s been going on in our lives.
